Today, we planted our first tree, a beautiful tulip tree with two catmint (purple) and two coreopsis (yellow) perennials! The group dug a big hole and even had to break up some asphalt remaining from a prior curb strip before dropping the tree in place and filling the hole with soil and compost. The children playing on the playground helped us construct the tree doughnut, plant the perennials, and mulch the area.

Westville Community Nursery School

Today, I met with the Westville Community Nursery School Board to discuss plans for beautifying the Tour Ave streetscape surrounding the Westville Community Nursery School campus and playground. The group identified beautification of the curb strip, providing shade for children using the playground, and easing maintenance efforts as main goals for the summer. The group is also interested in working within the community to better connect with neighbors in close proximity to campus. Regular workdays for this group will be Saturdays from 9am-11am.

Troup Group

During the initial 2017 summer planning meeting for the Beers St./Troup Group Greenspace group, streetscape maintenance, including pruning and mulching were discussed. Almost all of the trees planted in recent years are in very good health, but pruning will be required to help them survive and thrive. Group leader, Charlie Nixon, expressed a desire to plant additional trees where possible and spruce up the streetscape with perennials of various colors to liven the neighborhood.
