Summary
The Read Street Garden Club came together for the first time this year. They began the summer by working in the curb strips, planting perennials around the base of their existing trees. Read Street is lucky to have a healthy tree canopy and beautiful old trees, but the ground is eroded and compacted, with nothing growing. The perennials added this summer were a great aesthetic improvement but because of the heavy foot traffic, keeping them healthy presents a significant challenge. The group is also working in a 20 foot wide vacant lot next to Wanda Tyson’s house, which is already a social hub for the street. Before Greenspace, they built a grill with cinderblocks and the men of the neighborhood use the lot to play horseshoes. This summer the group put in bricks and gravel to formalize the entrance to the lot, planted a flower bed and shrubs on the eastern side of the lot, and worked in one front yard.
Other activity
The group paved the front of the lot with a strip of bricks and gravel.
