Summary

The Shepard Street Greenspace group began as an effort to turn a vacant lot into a beautiful garden. The group's core members are its leader and the neighborhood youth. The group is committed to stewardship of the lot including pruning, clean-up, weeding, mulching, and replacement plantings to restore the garden. In addition to ecological restoration and community building, the Shepard Street Greenspace group strives to incorporate an aspect of environmental education into its yearly program. Plants are selected to attract wildlife, and an apple tree provides excitement for the kids as each year it produces more fruit. The kids enjoy finding insects under rocks, planting perennials, and keeping the greenspace tidy.
