Summary

The Shepard Street Greenspace group is an emeritus group comprised of its group leader, Jody and the neighborhood kids who are stewards of a beautiful garden that was once a vacant lot. Every year Jody emphasizes on the need to include environmental education as part of work days at the Greenspace. This summer, we started out with a work day that included about half hour of environmental education. The first work day saw a big turnout of neighborhood kids who enjoyed working outdoors and actively participated in an environmental activity. As the season progressed, the participation of neighborhood kids was low despite outreach by Jody's granddaughter. With the help of Common Grounds student crew, the rear part of the greenspace was cleared off litter, weeds, and shrubs. In the near future, Jody would like to expand the pathway into the rear section so that the children can bike along the path. A section of a big tree behind Jody's house fell on the rear part of the greenspace few days after the crew cleared it.
