Summary

The Upper State Street Business Association applied for a Greenspace grant in 2009 with the goal of creating a better pedestrian connection between the Upper State Street and Jocelyn Square neighborhoods, which are divided by a dreary underpass beneath I-91. In their first year, the community focused on planting trees and perennials in the two neighborhoods, and cleaned up several DOT properties that abut I-91. The Greenspace group has utilized social networking as a powerful tool to recruit new participants, and thus provides a wonderful example of the community building capacity of Greenspace work.
