Summary

This summer, the Residents of Frances Hunter Drive focused largely on maintaining the rotary at the center of their block. Their first and previous summer, they had worked to plant up the rotary, however, it had become overgrown by weeds and tall grasses The group struggled to find a design that would enable easier maintenance eventually deciding to cover most of the rotary in mulch. The group weeded the old planting beds, established new plantings and spread many yards of mulch. Some members of the group also came together to plant a Shubert cherry in front of one home, and shrubs in others' front yards. Another concern of the group was that many of the trees originally planted along Frances Hunter had been suffering from lack of proper care, so they gave attention to proper pruning, mulching, and watering of these trees.<br> The Frances Hunter Drive development was built only 3 years ago, but the neighbors have already developed a strong sense of community. While working at the rotary on Friday evenings, people driving by in cars, or walking down the sidewalk would often stop to chat with workers, and the openness of the block meant work on the rotary was very visible. As a result of this visibility, community members would wander over to help with weeding and socialize with their neighbors, clearly fulfilling the Greenspace goal of community building in addition to the goal of community greening.
