Summary

The vision for the Mechanic St. Arboretum began almost 10 years ago when a group of community members saw potential for a greenspace in a vacant lot. Today, it is a leafy, peaceful pocket park by Blake Field. With a lush tree canopy and native plant selection, the Arboretum serves as a quiet respite for the neighborhood. Community members have carved rock-lined paths, built stone benches and planted blueberry bushes and understory shrubs. As construction winds down on East Rock Elementary School adjacent to the park, this site will provide ample opportunity for outdoor classroom gatherings and environmental education. This year the greenspace group focused on stewardship. With the help of student volunteers from Hopkins School, the group weeded, mulched, removed dead and damaged trees, and completely recovered the stone dust walkways in the park.

Other activity

The group completely redefined the stone dust paths throughout the park this year, spreading 3 yards of stone dust.
