Summary

Residents of Blatchley and Pine streets started the Poplar Street Greenspace group last year. While the Poplar Street Greenspace group was only formerly organized into a Greenspace group last year, the leading advocate, Alderwomen Migdalia Castro, has been active in several different Greenspace groups since 2004. Migdalia is devoted to beautifying her neighborhood and to encouraging community involvement and activities with the aim of making the neighborhood clean, safe and full of life. In an effort to increase participation in Greenspace activities, the group spread its activities this summer between many different streets, drawing diverse people from across central Fair Haven. As a result, three new Greeenspace groups may have been launched from this summer's efforts. This group met 12 times this summer to plant trees along curb strips and in front yards and transform twenty barren curb strips into flowering perennial gardens. The group met their main goal of beautifying the streetscape on Poplar Street by planting the curb strip areas around Poplar and Clay street with flowers of every color and adding five new shade and flowering street trees.
