Summary
Promise Land is working to make Newhallville a more peaceful place through a variety of projects in the community. For the Promise Land beautification project, the pastors and residents leading the group turned to URI's Greenspace program. During their first year in the Greenspace program, Promise Land attracted an outstanding 69 volunteers who worked for over 200 hours to beautify Newhallville. Promise Land decided to work on a vacant lot at Bassett St. & Shepard St. after their wildly successful first Bassett St. cleanup. The leaders engaged neighbors near the lot, who then joined the group. Volunteers worked long hours, transforming the rocky, weedy, uninviting space by planting a perennial bed along the front of the lot. The group attracted attention from passers-by, excited about the new flowers, shrubs, and tree on the street. Promise Land plans to use the lot to host a fall social event as a way to continue building community through this green space.
