Justine Phillips-Gallucci is a rising second-year Master of Environmental Management candidate at the Yale School of the Environment. She studied Environmental Studies, with a focus in Wildlife Conservation, at the University of Connecticut, and is happy to be continuing her studies in New Haven. She is passionate about wildlife conservation and habitat restoration in urban areas and hopes to apply some of this knowledge as a Greenspace Intern this summer. When not working, she enjoys birdwatching, cooking, and hiking with her dog.

Today, the Cherry Ann volunteers finished a wonderful and productive season! The kids planted two new hostas in the garden, and then watered all of their plants, while Will picked up trash around the park. Afterwards, it was time to celebrate! The workday concluded with a cookout at Miss Connie's house to thank the kids for all of their hard work stewarding and beautifying the park this summer. |

For the last workday of the season, the Washington Ave volunteers decided to move the greenspace sign in the garden, since the view of it from the street had been blocked by the rosebushes. After working together to dig out the sign, the volunteers moved it to the middle garden, to make it more visible and welcoming for community members. |

The Friends of Sea Street Circle officially finished their planting season today! The group has planted over 100 perennials, and today, planted the last twelve Russian Sage, to finish their design for this summer. After finishing, the group watered and admired the change in the circle that the new plantings had brought, including many bees and butterflies! All of their hard work has certainly paid off to meet their goals for this season. |

The Clifton St. River Garden volunteers wrapped up the summer with maintenance and watering of both the street garden and the canoe launch garden. Some of the volunteers worked on pulling out weeds and trimming back the plants, while the others focused on watering. The evening concluded with lemonade, watermelon, and cookies to celebrate all of the hard work done and new volunteers welcomed this season. |

The Friends of Quinnipiac River started the last workday of the season by watering the two gardens and many of the trees in the park and pruning some of the trees. After making quick work of maintenance, the group had a picnic to celebrate all of the hard work and accomplishments of the volunteers this summer. They enjoyed pizza, watermelon, and chatting. |

The Friends of Fairmont Park had a very productive season, and spent the last workday of the summer stewarding all of the hard work they had done. Woodchips were spread around some of the new shrubs, and everything was watered. The group also inventoried all of the shrubs they had planted to make a planting map. After some maintenance, the group had a picnic, with fruit and pizza, to celebrate! |

Today was focused on maintenance of the existing plantings in the gardens and the park as a whole. Will picked up trash around the park, and then helped to water the two gardens. Meanwhile, Miss Connie did some weeding in the community garden. Finally, a new parking sign was hung up on the fence to direct park visitors to the lot where they could park their cars. |

Today was a special day for Washington Ave, as a beautiful Kwanzan Cherry tree was planted in memorial. The morning started off on a difficult note, with a huge rock impeding the digging of the hole, but with perseverance and teamwork, the group was able to get the rock out! Once the hole was completed, the whole group helped with different parts of planting the tree, including removing the wire basket, mixing the compost and soil, and filling in the hole. Once the tree was planted, 4 violets were also added in, and then a layer of fresh woodchips was spread around the tree. Finally, the kids got to work watering the tree and all the other plants in the garden. It was a beautiful morning and a great way to end the planting season! |

Today, the Sea Street volunteers finished filling in the planting pattern that they had been working on, adding in the final coneflower, sedum, and daylilies! With that part of the project complete for now, the group moved on to planting some Russian sage to start filling in the gaps between sections. With the majority of the planting complete, the group finished off their hard work for the day by watering all of the plants. |

The Clifton St. volunteers enjoyed a beautiful sunset and the river breeze on the last planting day of the season! 3 variegated liriope, 3 yarrow, and 2 sedum were planted in the garden to bring different pops of color and texture. The group also planted a bunch of vinca minor along the edge of the garden, in hopes of stabilizing the ground to keep mulch and dirt from running off into the drain. The group finished with watering, picking up trash, and pruning some of the bushes. |

Today, the Friends of Quinnipiac River Park had an amazing end to their planting season with the completion of the expansion of the bird garden! 4 new Perpetua blueberry bushes were planted in the garden, which will provide berries and cover for the many birds in the park. Then, the group also added a few more perennials--speedwell, coneflower, and Agastache--to the pollinator garden. Finally, the group conducted the last of their maintenance activities for the season--weeding, mulching, and lots of watering! The workday concluded with a plan to have a picnic to celebrate a successful season. |

The Fairmont Park volunteers had a very successful last day of planting for the season! 7 spicebush and 5 silky dogwood were planted across the park. Afterwards, the group continued their summer-long project of pulling out invasive plants; the huge pile at the end and the newly cleared space in the garden bed showed that their hard work is paying off! |

Today was a special day for the Washington Ave greenspace! A group of students from LEAP, an academic and social enrichment program, came to work in the garden. The girls participated in digging holes and planting 8 perennials (5 sedum and 3 liriope) with group leader Nikki, as well as watering the whole garden. Then, they did an arts and crafts project--customizing their own laminated butterfly signs to be hung up around the garden! It was a very productive day, and the team looks forward to coming back in the future! |

Although it was a hot day, the Cherry Ann kids worked hard to finish up planting and spreading woodchips in one of the entrance gardens. The group started by weeding the area, to make room for the three new coralbells that they would plant! And after planting, they watered all of perennials in both gardens, and raked a new layer of woodchips down. Meanwhile, neighbor Will had been around the park, picking up trash. The day concluded with snacks and then a cookout at Miss Connie's to thank the kids for all of their hard work. |

Today, a small but mighty group of volunteers came out to the traffic circle to continue planting, and their hard work made a huge impact! 34 more perennials were planted, bringing the group even closer to completing their planting design for the summer. And afterwards, the volunteers watered all the plants in the circle to keep everything looking green and beautiful. |

Today was one of the most well-attended workdays for the Friends of Quinnipiac River, and so it is no surprise that the group was very successful in meeting their goals for the day. First, 6 new perennials (3 Agastache and 3 Tickseed) were planted in the newly expanded bird garden, both as pollinator plants and to bring a pop of color. Then, the group worked together on stewardship--watering, weeding, laying down new woodchips, and tidying up the edge of the garden. The group concluded with a discussion of their vision for the last day of planting next week. |

Despite the heat, the Fairmont Park volunteers had a great and productive workday. Four more native shrubs were planted in the Forest Regeneration garden, and then the group split up to work on watering and removing invasives in several different locations in the park. Lots of burning bush, japanese honeysuckle, and multiflora rose were removed, making room for new plantings in the future. The group concluded with a plan to finishing planting shrubs for the last workday of the season next week! |

Today, the Friends of Sea Street Circle continued filling the traffic circle with beautiful perennials, adding 21 more coneflower, sedum, and daylily to brighten up the area! After planting, the volunteers worked together to water all of the plants and shrubs in the circle to help take care of them given the recent drought conditions. Great progress is being made to transform this circle into a colorful, drought-resistant, and pollinator-friendly garden. |

A tree in the park that had lost some of its limbs was decorated with beautifully painted birdhouses, which were created by park volunteers, as well as residents from Chatham Place at Mary Wade. The Fairmont Park volunteers continued their invasive removal project this week; removing burning bush, multiflora rose, and japanese honeysuckle from one of the large beds. Once the area was cleared, the group was able to plant native shrubs in their place. The workday concluded with watering and placing stakes around the forest edge to protect the new shrubs that were planted. |

Today, the Friends of Quinnipiac River Park started work to expand their bird garden, so that more berry bushes and perennials can be planted. We worked on removing grass around the garden in preparation for laying down new woodchips, along with weeding the current bed. After making great progress on this big project, we watered last week's plantings and selected a location to plant a tree later in the summer. |

Then, the group planted 9 new shrubs--5 elderberry and 4 arrowwood viburnum--along the forest at the edge of the field! To finish, the group continued the process of removing invasives, successfully clearing another area at the edge of the field where more shrubs can now be planted. |
