Summary
The vision for the Mechanic St. Arboretum began almost 10 years ago when a group of community members saw potential for a greenspace in a vacant lot. Today, it is a leafy, peaceful pocket by Blake Field. With a lush tree canopy and only plant species native to Connecticut, the Arboretum serves as a cool outdoor classroom for East Rock Elementary School and a quiet respite for the neighborhood. Community members have carved rock-lined paths, built stone benches and planted blueberry bushes and understory shrubs. This year the Greenspace group focused on stewardship. With the help of members from Fellowship Place, the group created a twine fence for the existing grapes to grow up and removed many of the weeds from the site.
