Summary
This was the first year that AIDS Interfaith (AIN) services partnered with URI to begin planting projects along Elsie Cofield Way, a short lane running off a commercial section of Chapel Street towards the fields behind the Dwight School. The lane had virtually no trees, and many empty flower beds along the sidewalk, so there was much potential for environmental restoration and improvement. Children and counselors from the YMCA Camp which walks down that street each day on their way to the Dwight School athletic fields joined with AIN staff to plant trees and perennial beds along the sidewalk. AIN staff and clients and YMCA counselors broke concrete along the sidewalk to clear pits for 3 street trees. The planting project acted as an environmental education project for the children, many of whom had never gardened before. Now the walk from Chapel Street to the Dwight School down Elsie Cofield is a chance for the children and other passersby to admire their work.
