Summary

The Ferry and Grafton group formed this year and participated in the Community Greenspace program after a resident near this intersection heard about the Greenspace program at a Chatham Square Neighborhood Association meeting. The group only had one tree planting this summer, but demonstrated growing community support.. One resident, Eric Neubauer, essentially took over leadership of the group, posting flyers and making personal contact with many neighbors. As a result, there was an impressive community showing for their one planting (about 15 adults), and the group was able to plant two trees near the otherwise very bare intersection of Ferry and Grafton. Most of the residents who showed up to the planting had never met but succeeded in balancing efficient work with socializing. After finishing with the two trees, some neighbors picked up trash in the area or helped other residents with their private plantings Eric provided coffee and donuts while community members continued meeting and chatting with new acquaintances. Already the area looks much more beautiful and cared for, and there remains huge potential for both tree planting and community building in this neighborhood.
