2022 Greenspace Report

Under Xochi’s leadership, the Fair Haven Library sanctuary garden project is off to a fantastic start. The project aims to recognize and respect the Indigenous peoples who currently live in or originate from the area. The robust history of the space, the land, and the peoples of the area make this project extremely important. For that reason, the group decided to spend much of this season planning, recruiting volunteers and raising awareness. By the end of the summer, Desiree joined in as a regular volunteer and the group was able to spend one day doing major clean-up of the space. The group plans to continue meeting throughout the year in order to keep planning and building a team interested in working on the space.

2022 Report for Fair Haven Library

Greenspace Log

08/03/2022

In their first ever workday, Xochi, Desiree and Molly worked to clean-up, weed, water and maintain the Fair Haven Library space. The group is still building a design to hopefully implement next year but saw a need for upkeep of the current space and the existing plants. Through the weeding process, the group collected two garbage bags full of plant material to be composted. Since the weather has been dry, the group watered many plants and pruned other plants. Two pear trees that seem to be struggling to survive in the back of the library were given compost and a thorough watering. The group is excited at the beauty of the beginning of this project and continues to look for new volunteers interested in joining in. They plan to meet again on Aug 10th at 9:30am.

Xochi and Molly met with Matthew Makomenaw of Yale NACC to see if students would be interested in getting involved in the project. He invited them to meet the students at the welcome back party this Fall.
