2013 Greenspace Report

Beautifying the neighborhood around Grand Avenue began early in the season with a high-energy planting event at Christopher Columbus Family Academy. A group of parents, kids, neighbors and festival-goers collaborated to plant rose bushes and flowers around the Grand Av. school sign during the music-filled Celebrate Our Fair Haven block-party, helping to kick-off the city-wide International Festival of Arts and Ideas at the beginning of June. Then starting in mid-July a group of local business owners a couple of blocks west on Grand and Lloyd Street started organizing to plant trees and flowers in order to bring more color and life to the concrete-dominated urban streetscape. With the arrival of the first tree and the first concrete slabs cut and removed to make room for new curbside greenspaces, local residents eagerly joined the fun and a new URI Community Greenspace collaboration between business owners and Lloyd Street residents was born.

2013 Accomplishments

• 3 trees planted (Hophornbeam, Red Maple, Kwanzan Cherry)
• 2 shrubs planted (Roses)
• 27 perennials planted (Coreopsis, liriope, daylillies, yarrow, hostas, sedum, uva ursi, coralbells, black-eyed susan)
• 1.0 yards compost spread
• 2.0 yards mulch spread
• 8 events
• 20 volunteers
• 104 volunteer hours
