Summary

Under the leadership of Mr. Michael Maynard and his children, the neighbors of Henry Street work hard to maintain an attractive block of Henry Street between Dixwell Avenue and Orchard Street. The group is comprised of a number of adult volunteers, but the most hard-working volunteers are the children who range in age from kindergarten to a recent high school graduate. This past summer was the Henry Street Greenspace Group's second year in the program. The group met weekly on Tuesdays in an effort to promote a sense of community in the neighborhood as well as to improve the overall appearance of the streetscape. Activities included weekly efforts to pick up trash, weeding and mulching of the trees, shrubs and front yard perennial beds which were planted in prior years. The group also spent a long afternoon picking up trash on the corner lot where the convenience store 'Hot Spot' is located. This particular lot is literally a hot spot in terms of drug activity and loitering. The group hopes to some day have the opportunity to plant trees and shrubs along a pathway that transects the lot. Lieutenant Anthony Duff, the NHPD District Manager of the Dixwell neighborhood was an active presence throughout the summer. He visited with volunteers frequently, and also commissioned two officers to assist volunteers with traffic safety, as many of the projects involved moving materials and tools across Henry Street during a busy time of day. As a thank you, the Henry St volunteers planted a perennial bed in front of the Dixwell substation located off of Dixwell, behind the C-Town supermarket. Afterward, each of the young volunteers was given a certificate of recognition signed by Lt. Duff and Mr. Maynard.
