Summary
Dover Beach volunteers continue to steward the beautiful riverfront park, especially in the Children’s Butterfly Garden, Urban Oasis, and State St. entrance. Christel, Joyce and Pat focused this year especially on the Urban Oasis, with the help of Common Ground high schoolers. They made great strides in removing mugwort and other weeds from the area and spread woodchips at the entrance and within the oasis to suppress future weeds. The group also took creative liberties. They converted dumped haybales into welcoming raised perennial gardens at the front of the Urban Oasis. Additionally, they put up a sign to give more details on the goals of the oasis and to recruit more volunteers from the neighborhood. While working at the park, it was beautiful to see a variety of birds and pollinators enjoying the urban oasis. The groups’ commitment to the space is evident in the continued progress on growing a healthy habitat along the river.
