Summary
The Friends of East Rock gathered for 2 visioning sessions to start of the summer season. During these visioning sessions, community members decided upon creating an educational native species garden that was organized into “pods” of plants with each pod telling an ecologically themed story to the public. Volunteers then transformed a section of the park near the environment center by planting a tree, shrubs, and 60+ perennials. Three pods of perennials were planted each centered around different themes including: monarch butterflies, fritillary butterflies, and the forest understory. In addition to transforming the greenspace, the community involvement transformed from a group of 2 core volunteers to a group of 6 core volunteers plus consistent help from additional community members each day. With a large group of volunteers and invaluable help from amazing youth at work, the space has grown into something special for future years.
