Summary

The Hallock & Congress Greenspace group is new to the program in 2010. While initially the group planned to beautify front yards and transform a vacant lot, it was decided that the largest and most immediate impact for the block could be made in planting trees, which were largely missing from the streetscape. The leadership and large number of youth were critical to the group accomplishing as much as it did, committing themselves to working double duty in breaking concrete to then be able to plant trees. The journey of this group is in new and long-time residents getting to know each other toward accomplishing something beautiful, and the success was in making the activities worthwhile for the younger generation. The group planted 9 street trees and is poised to break concrete and plant 28 additional trees in the coming years. The trees selected include alternating pink and white flowering Crabapples and shade trees with green leaves and yellow accents on the opposite side of the street for a colorful, interesting display. The group is looking forward to making the most of every group workday next summer, which would hopefully include transforming the vacant lot.
