Summary
It was a wonderful summer at the Orchard Street Community Greenspace. A core group of 4 dedicated volunteers worked hard to get rid of the invasive Japanese Knotweed that had taken over the back half of the property. Using materials from the convenience store down the street, the group laid cardboard boxes down on the newly weeded soil before covering the area with a thick layer of mulch to suppress weed growth once and for all! The group also planted a series of colorful azalea shrubs and perennials along either side of the property in areas that were formerly shaded by two large trees removed by the city earlier this year. Perhaps the most exciting part of the summer was the relationship formed between the Orchard Street volunteers and the Get ‘Em Boy boxing club down the street. Several children from the boxing club started joining in the weekly workdays along with their Coach who learned about the opportunity from group leader Lenora Turner.
