Summary
For the past two years, Doreen Abubakar has organized workdays at the Beaver Ponds Fishing for youth from Newhallville. As the executive director of CPEN, the Community Placemaking Engagement Network, Doreen has dedicated herself to improving access and engagement between Newhallville’s residents and the parks around them. The Beaver Ponds Fishing Pier project was implemented to provide access to reach and fish in Beaver Ponds Park, which had previously been inaccessible. Beyond this, CPEN’s summer program also works with Newhallville youth, providing them with job experience in gardening and landscaping. Over the four weeks that the program operated, the participants lined the path to the water with new perennials, planted additional shrubs along the hill to stop the flow of trash, and weeded and mulched the new flowerbeds.
