Summary
Upper State Street had an outstanding season! This year, the group of neighbors as well as local business owners and employees decided to focus their efforts on the Humphrey Street underpass between State and East Streets. The project was the culmination of a long-term effort to plant trees and perennials where gaps between the overpasses allow sun and rain to reach the underpass. The group removed concrete in ten different sites along Humphrey Street and planted nine trees, as well as a host of shade-loving perennials. Their incredible effort has resulted in a complete revitalization of this once barren space. In addition, the transformed space is already acting as a bridge between the two neighborhoods it used to divide; residents from both neighborhoods worked together to beautify the underpass.
