Summary
Doreen Abubakar, founder of Community Placemaking Engagement Network (CPEN) in New Haven, led a transformative summer youth camp at Beaver Ponds Fishing Pier, which also served as a community greenspace. The camp, reflecting CPEN's mission, provided neighborhood youth with hands-on experience in practical outdoor skills, environmental stewardship, and leadership in restoration projects. Through their collective efforts, the participants successfully planted seven shrubs and thirteen perennials, enhancing the beauty of the area and laying the groundwork for future plantings. This initiative not only beautified the space but also instilled a sense of community pride and environmental responsibility in the young participants.
