Summary

Doreen Abubakar has spent the past three years creating a network of community groups dedicated to making a fishing pier for the Newhallville community at Beaver Ponds. The Beaver Ponds Fishing Pier is not only designed as a community gathering space and somewhere for neighbors to connect with nature, but it is also deeply rooted in facilitating education. Community fishing classes and school groups use the space frequently and the work that the greenspace group provides is truly appreciated. This year, with the help of interns from the Community Placemaking Engagement Network and groups from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife, CT DEEP, SCSU and the Southwest Conservation District a huge amount of progress was made on the site. Not only has the physical space become safer, and more usable due to new benches and perennials, the groups of people who care about the space have grown. Building partnerships through the Beaver Ponds Fishing Pier was a primary goal at the site's conception and this year those partnerships made a huge difference in what was able to be completed.
