Summary

This was the Fountain Street group’s 1st year participating in the Community Greenspace program. The group was formed with the goal of restoring a traffic island at the intersection of Fountain and Ramsdell Streets as a way to beautify the Amity neighborhood and welcome people traveling between Woodbridge and New Haven. The first half of the summer was spent encouraging community involvement, building a vision for the island, and preparing the site for new plantings (including weeding the entire space and replacing existing topsoil with new, nutrient-rich soil). Following these preparations, the group planted a series of new shrubs and perennials to fill the space and add color. Specific plantings included red rosa rugosa or beach rose, white Shasta daisies, yellow coreopsis and purple Russian sage. To complete the site’s makeover and encourage use by neighbors and visitors alike, the group’s final project was the construction of a bluestone pathway running through the center of the island. This hard work has had a dramatic impact on the Fountain and Ramsdell intersection, and with more improvements being planned the group has solidified their commitment to beautifying Amity and the New Haven community as a whole.
