Summary
Lower State is an exciting new group that represents the partnership between The Grove (a nonprofit located downtown) and students at High School in the Community. The group works on the median on State Street between Crown and Chapel. They identified this area as needing restoration and stewardship care because New Haven residents often travel across the median as they commute between downtown and the train station. Although the space contains beautiful Zelkova trees, it lacked character before Lower State began their work. The group worked on a plan to see this median transform into an artistically and environmentally beautiful space for members of the community to enjoy. This year, the group focused on planting a perennial garden bed under the shade casted by the Zelkovas and also establishing a vibrant rose garden in the sunniest portion of the median. Both plantings have brought a sense of vitality to the space and will usher in more exciting plantings and projects in upcoming years.
