Summary
PEACE GARDEN AT WEST RIVER began this season as an emeritus group, focued mostly on maintaining the Peace Garden. The group leader, Stacy Spell, also wanted to conduct a community outreach and plant more colorful perennials and shrubs in 'the boat' - a raised triangular median in front of Dunkin' Donuts at Derby Ave and George St. The community in this area is very unreceptive to volunteering opportunities, so only four volunteers participated in one planting event. Another challenge is lack of water access anywhere near the site. Stacy Spell overcomes this challenge weekly by driving containers of water from his home. This season, he received a key to the Parks Department water spigot to get water access at the nearby Monitor Square.
