Summary
Environmental restoration and stewardship of the West River Peace Garden is back in full swing! The Peace Garden was new to the Greenspace program in Summer 2022 and accomplished a lot over the past few months. The garden, which was erected in the 1990s to honor New Haven’s status as a United Nations Peace Messenger City, had been in a state of disrepair for several decades until a group of dedicated neighbors decided to give the site some much-needed TLC. Volunteers had a very successful summer full of weeding, pruning, debris removal, and mulching. A series of new plantings helped fill in empty space in the garden bed that was once overrun by weeds. The plantings are all pollinator-friendly and have already started to attract bees and beautiful Monarch butterflies to the garden! Add to the mix some new signage drawing attention to the restoration work happening at the site and the West River Peace Garden had itself a very triumphant first summer as a Greenspace site.
