On our last day of work at Cedar Hill, we spread some mulch in front of the playground. That wraps up another year of work at Cedar Hill for Greenspace! |
07/29/2017 |
Today the kids from CGHS helped us clear out the back of the greenspace to put in 6 arborvitaes and a big layer of mulch. Our work today is going to help set up the creation of a stone dust path connecting the stone wall and the circular path in the middle. |
07/28/2017 |
Today we finished mulching the median, and had extra to spare to put down in front of the playground! We had extra help today from katia, who spread almost the entire half yard of mulch herself. |
07/28/2017 |
Today we attacked the phragmites in the WR Urban Oasis, and removed them with a tarp. In addition to removing the phragmites, we planted 6 sweet gale where the phragmites used to be, and then laid down some wildflower seed where the mugwort used to be. Once again, the CGHS workers did amazing work! |
07/26/2017 |
Today we planted a big london plane tree on thompson street. Ronnie, the homeowner, was very excited to put another london plane in front of his house, and the extra tall daylillies we planted around the base make the tree look even better. |
07/25/2017 |
Today at Hannah Gray we planted up the box near the bus stop with 18 perennials and a butterfly bush. We had the most volunteers we had ever seen, and had plenty of supporters cheering us on. Cathleen specifically noted how much the flowers lift her spirits. |
07/21/2017 |
Today we cleaned up the corner garden, with some help from Betty's family. We mulched the outline and trimmed back the ivy. Lastly, we picked up all of the trash and cleaned up the sidewalks! |
07/21/2017 |
Today I met up with Mr. Campbell to spread another yard of mulch over the remainder of the greenspace. Thanks to Dylan who helped speed up the process! |
07/19/2017 |
Today at Newhall and Division we cleaned up Belindas yard, and planted three hostas along the fence. We put down a layer of mulch on top of that, and picked out all the weeds from around the yard stones. |
07/18/2017 |
Today we raked out the median and picked out trash, filling up an entire trash bag. We had extra help from Jean Carlos, Jasdiell, and Darcy. |
07/15/2017 |
This week we put mulch down all over the Shepard Street Greenspace, filling in where we had pulled out so many weeds before. We had some help from Mr. Gamble as well, who really helped spread the entire yard of mulch I had brought over. |
07/14/2017 |
Today at WRM we pulled mugwort out of the Oasis in abundance. The volunteers from Common Ground High School did an awesome job clearing around 30% of all the mugwort in one day, which is a ton, given the size of the Oasis. |
07/14/2017 |
This week Debbie Johnson and I oversaw the common ground high schoolers work in the Oasis at West River. Together, we managed to pull an entire truck beds worth of mugwort from the oasis, in preparation for planting wildflower seeds on the bare soil. Kyle in particular was very involved, pulling by far the most mugwort from the Oasis. |
07/13/2017 |
This week, with the help of the Common Ground High School kids, we replaced a dead serviceberry tree in the urban oasis and pulled out many weeds. At one point, 4 different high schoolers formed a human chain to pull out a massive root network of a multiflora rose plant. The high schoolers became very familiar with muliflora rose that day, as we pulled about 4 leaf bags worth of them from the oasis. |
07/12/2017 |
This week on Newhall Street we planted 2 Hydrangeas and 2 Rhododendrons in Dans yard, and then re-mulched some old tree plantings on Thompson Street. We also planted 8 Daylillies around our newly mulched plantings along Thompson. We had another great turnout, and were joined by a new young volunteer named Andre from across the street. |
07/01/2017 |
On our final clean up day at Shepard Street, we cleared the middle bed of weeds and raked all of the leaves out form around the liriope. Everything is ready to be mulched! Once again, Adrian provided all of the muscle and pulled tons of weeds. |
06/30/2017 |
This week we set out planters all over Cedar Hill. The planters were provided by the city, on a grant that Betty wrote and received. We put out 8 planters in total, and all of them were filled and prepared by Betty! Kevin McCarthy was super helpful in coming by and providing the extra set of hands that help us beat the thunderstorm rolling in! |
06/29/2017 |
Today we made up for our missed workday on Saturday with another day of weeding in the Shepard Street Oasis. Adrian came by and managed to fill up an entire leaf bag full of weeds. At the end, we pulled up a small elm tree that adrian planted in a small container and is planning on caring for on his porch! |
06/29/2017 |
This week we planted a yucca at the bikeway in the sunny corner of the garden. After that, we headed down to the mid bridge garden to lay down mulch around the shrubs and to weed out the knotweed that had already started to sprout back up. |
06/28/2017 |
Today we planted a tree lilac by Dans house and a crab apple at 94 Thompson. The crabapple was particularly difficult to dig for, as there was a stump right next to the planting site. We had to dig up many roots, and errol brought over an axe to help out. Once again, the neighborhood turnout was great, and many bystanders came through to offer mental support! |
06/22/2017 |
Today we cleaned up and planted perennials along the bikeway on Edgewood Avenue. We put down some Coral Bells, Lady's mantle, and 4 transplanted spiderwort from Stephanie's garden at home. We lined the bed with dead sticks and branches from the surrounding path, and filled it in with compost and mulch. |
06/21/2017 |
Today we totally revamped the bikeway garden with a planting bed defined by logs, and some colorful perennials. We put down mulch and compost within the triangular garden next to the road and then planted 4 coral bells, and 2 lady's mantle. Additionally we planted multiple spiderwort flowers that stephanie had transplanted from her garden. |
06/21/2017 |
Today we planted two trees on Hazel Street and added some perennials around their bases. Hazel street was filled with people out enjoying the hot weather, and many people stopped by to help the planting. Lewis in particular showed up on the work site, and within 20 minutes both root balls were in the ground! We got lots of great attention and hope to see everyone back next week. |
06/20/2017 |
Today at Hannah Gray we overturned a corner of the bed next to the home. Our goal is to weed out the entire bed and plant some colorful perennials to give the corner a nice greenspace. It is a high-traffic area that many will enjoy! |
06/17/2017 |
Today was a very light day, as nobody except Jody showed up to work. We will be working with meeting again next week, but decided we will be walking around for 10 minutes before our work session to increase recruitment! Other than this discussion, we weeded out the path in the green space and laid down some mulch in the curb strip in front of Jody's house. |
06/16/2017 |
Today was a light work day in the rain. We finished up spreading mulch on the 219 garden and planted 2 variegated hosta and 2 lady's mantle. We then moved to plant some perennials that Betty brought from her own house in Betty's Median. |
06/15/2017 |
Today we talked about pruning and moved on to prune the trees up and down Nash St. The cuts we made lifted the canopy on most of the streets trees. We also planned to plant a tree on the 13th. |
06/15/2017 |
Today we planted 5 ninebark bushes, 2 mountain laurels, and 6 clethra by the mid bridge. We totally transformed the way the area by the mid bridge looks! After planting all these shrubs, we watered the area with water from the creek nearby. We had help from Cindy today as well, which made a massive difference. |
06/14/2017 |
Today we cleaned up Keith's front yard and the tree in front of his house. We weeded out his gravel garden, and planted a boxwood, 2 hostas, and 2 coral bells in front of the house. Additionally we planted 3 coral bells in around the tree after weeding it out. |
06/09/2017 |
Today we planted three Yuccas in the 219 garden and mulched the bed. We had awesome help from new volunteer Miranda and Javari stopped by and did the bulk of the mulching and weeding. |
06/08/2017 |
Today we planted 2 Hosta, 2 Montauk Daisies, and 3 cat mints in Little Nash park. We also finished mulching the bed and decided to move on and prune the trees next week. |
06/08/2017 |
Today we turfed out, weeded and mulched the Urban Oasis in Edgewood Park. We managed to create a planting area on the side of the path, and cleared away weeds on the north side of the lowbush blueberry planting bed. |
06/07/2017 |
Today we planted a kwanzan cherry tree to replace an existing but dead snowdrift crabapple on the corner of Starr and Newhall. We had good attendance and Samantha picked up an entire bags worth of trash in the area around the truck. |
06/02/2017 |
Today we weeded and cleaned up trash from the 219 garden. We managed to attract the attention of some neighbors and about halfway through the work session, Javari joined us to help clean up. Next week, we are returning to the 219 to plant at least one perennial and to clean up even more. |
05/31/2017 |
Today we pruned all of the trees on Division St. between Newhall and Winchester Ave. We also pruned all of the new plantings on Thompson and Starr. Errol and Calvin showed me a location on Starr St. where we plan on replacing an existing Snowdrift Crabapple with a Kawnzan Cherry next week. While we were working, many people walked by and we were able to spread the word about Greenspace even further through the neighborhood! |
05/30/2017 |
I met with Jody Shepard today and planned out how we wanted to tackle the summer. She gave me a quick tour of the Greenspace, and we discussed where to focus planting and maintenance. We decided our best bet was to start the season on the 17th of June, given that the nieghborhood kids will be out of school. After deciding to replace the butterfly tree and plant more everygreen trees in the Greenspace, we passed out flyers up and down the street. |
05/27/2017 |
Today Stephanie gave me an in-depth tour of the Edgewood Park grounds, walking me through all of her potential areas of concern including the Urban Oasis and the new pathway by the mid-bridge. We even watched a deer quietly walking through the park by the Ranger Station. For our next meeting, we agreed to take out the knotweed covering the entrance to the mid-bridge, and lay down mulch to emphasize the path running parallel to the river. We also found a potential planting spot in front of the mid bridge where Stephanie was eager to put down a tree to help indicate the beginning of the new path her husband cut. |
05/26/2017 |
We walked around Cedar Hill and discussed out plans for the summer. We focused our ideas on three major areas of the neighborhood; the 219 garden, Betty's Median, and the Garden on the corner of Rock St. Next week we will be weeding and cleaning up the 219 Garden! |
05/24/2017 |
Dennis and I spoke for a brief period of time in the Urban Oasis and designated a few sets of priorities for the summer. Our biggest priority is to build a community at WRM and get great, regular attendance at volunteer sessions. As for the Oasis itself, we decided our first step should be to weed out the mugwort and other invasives that have taken over, and to replant some of the dying trees. |
05/24/2017 |
Today we walked around the neighborhood between Starr and Division, scoping out possible tree planting locations and passing out flyers. We handed out all ten flyers to potential volunteers who all seemed very eager to start working next week. Our next meeting will be a maintenance day for pruning and weeding. |
