Summary
This summer, Nan Bartow, Joan Hilliard, and Kim Stoner continued their hard work stewarding and beautifying the Beaver Ponds Urban Oasis. The oasis blooms in stages throughout the summer, creating a dynamic showcase of colorful native pollinator plants like golden rod, aster, and bee balm which each get their time in the limelight. A sunny meadow and shaded woodland provide an ecologically diverse native environment for both animals and people to enjoy. This summer, the group focused on environmental stewardship by removing invasive species such as mugwort, bittersweet, phragmites, and multiflora rose. They also made improvements to the space by repairing the deer fence and bench and adding new plants to the meadow, swale, and in front of the oasis’s gates. This year, the group planted liatris, coneflower, tickseed, New York aster, yarrow, swamp rose-mallow, cardinal flower, and great blue lobelia. Thanks to the love, consistent effort, and stewardship of a small group of volunteers over the years, this Greenspace has blossomed into a healthy and beautiful natural environment—a true oasis in the heart of western New Haven.
