Summary
Cherry Ann is an exciting greenspace group to be involved with both in terms of the work that there is to be done and in the level and nature of the community participation. Drawing from the enthusiasm of group leaders Mike Rich and Connie Vereen and the numerous children that participate, Cherry Ann has made tremendous strides in just a few years as the park has been transformed from a dumping site into a valuable community resource. This year, while the greenspace group worked throughout the park, the bulk of the work was focused on clearing the area at the entrance of the park at Cherry Ann St. and expanding and enhancing an entrance garden at the site. The group successfully, cleared the area of trash, removed weedy growth and planted four trees, 19 shrubs and 30 perennials.
Other activity
Additional work at Cherry Ann Park over the summer done by other stakeholder groups in the project include: weeding and planting at the Urban Oasis site by a group from Common Ground High School, the installation of a new trail connecting the park to the Jackie Robinson School and the installation of a new fence along the northern edge of the park as well as the construction of a new children’s playset by the New Haven Parks Department. In August, the incoming class at the Yale School of Forestry will also plant 21 new trees at the site.
