Summary

The Beaver Ponds Urban Oasis was stewarded and beautified this year under the leadership of Nan Bartow, Joan Hilliard, Kim Stoner, and Grace Mastalli-Lowther. The oasis is an incredible resource in Beaver Ponds Park, containing a meadow and woodlands focused on providing a native environment for animals and people to enjoy. The oasis blooms in stages throughout the summer, filled with native pollinator species, wildflowers, perennials, and shrubs planted by the group over the past few years. Consistent effort and stewardship have allowed the park to blossom into a healthy and beautiful natural environment in the heart of western New Haven. This summer, we focused primarily on the removal of invasives such as mugwort and bittersweet that had taken root in the oasis. We also planted several perennials in a garden in front of the oasis’s gate, although a stubborn groundhog dug up much of what we put in the ground. Thanks to the dedication of this Greenspace group’s members, the oasis has become a beautiful and relaxing native environment.
