Summary

This long-time emeritus group has worked in Beecher Park (surrounding Mitchell Library) since 2001. This season, they continued mulching, weeding, and maintenance of trees and a garden that attracts wild birds and pollinators. One of the group's goals was to replace a fallen Maple tree with a magnolia. The first big event of this year was the planting of a 'Solar Flare' magnolia tree by Hopkins volunteers who named it 'Peggy.' Later, Blockwatch 303 installed a plaque to commemorate this tree. Another memorable event was the annual Ladybug Release party, at which children and toddlers who attend Mitchell Library sing, learn about ladybugs, eat ice cream, and then release handfuls of ladybugs into the garden outside. This self-sufficient veteran group has fulfilled restoration, stewardship and community-building goals of the URI Greenspace program.
