2016 Greenspace Report

The group at the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven facility in the Hill entered its third summer with hopes of improving the plantings around its own facility and continuing to make an impact in the surrounding community. Because of challenges coordinating with their partner organization from last summer, LULAC Head Start, the group focused on tree planting, perennial planting, and stewardship around the Club facility. During four of the five work sessions, a devoted crew of 9-10 year olds demonstrated their competence as young gardeners. Some of our most competent group members evidently retained some of the knowledge and skill they gained last summer. Together, they managed to plant one large pin oak tree along Minor Street (behind the Club’s gymnasium) and plant two hardy perennial gardens on either side of the rear staircase. Lastly, they learned the importance of stewardship when generously watering their new tree and perennials several times a week, under the supervision of Club staff.
