Summary

The volunteers from Crossroads, Inc. made a big impact in a short amount of time in several areas along East Ramsdell St. between Valley St. and Whalley Ave. Crossroads is a residential rehabilitation facility for those who are recovering from drug addiction. Since 2001, clients from the facility have volunteered with the Greenspace program to work on the environmental restoration and stewardship of the surrounding neighborhood. This year the volunteers began by working on the stewardship of existing street trees along East Ramsdell St. They then tackled two restoration projects that Crossroads groups have worked on in the past, removal of invasives along the bank of the West River and trail clearing in Pond Lily Nature Preserve. At the end of the season the group responded to requests for trees from residents of McConaughy Terrace, the public housing community adjacent to the Crossroads campus. The group planted three trees in a single workday and transformed a weedy and hot grass strip into a beautiful shaded area that provides a screen between the Crossroads campus and the McConaughy Terrace units.
