Summary

This season, Dover Beach focused its efforts on the fenced-in garden by Front Street and Bailey Street. Gardening under I-91 certainly has its difficulties – trash, dumping, noise – but the Dover Beach volunteers have managed to transform the space into a veritable urban oasis, where birds and pollinators are frequently found tucking into the site’s fruit trees and fragrant bushes. With the help of Common Ground high schoolers, the volunteers laid an incredible three tons of mulch and planted eight shrubs, fifteen perennials, and two trees. The group also weeded and mulched at Dover Beach’s two butterfly gardens at the beginning and end of the season, making sure that all the greenspaces across the site were cared for.
