Summary

Friends of Edgewood Park is a high capacity group co-led by a large number of constant, committed and well-organized volunteers that work throughout the year to maintain the park’s plantings, tame the weeds, open new trails and encourage creative ideas such as recruiting goats to eat the invasive and resilient japanese knotweed that grows next to some streams. Stephanie Fitzgerald is the main person in charge of communications, she sends out a bulletin every week – even when she’s on vacation, and organizes the watering schedule, accounts for group workdays and helps train the Youth at Work interns that FOEP hires every year. The two main areas in which FOEP works through URI Greenspace are (i) the Mid Bridge and (ii) the Urban Oasis. The first is maintained with the intention of connecting two ends of the park, to make it safer and more inviting; the latter was started in 2015 due to its convenient location to attract pollinators, and continues to supported by a grant.
