Summary
This group started in 2014 with the goal of restoring the tree cover in Quinnipiac River Park after most of its mature trees were destroyed by hurricane Katrina. With an already good number of trees at the beginning of the 2016 season, the group’s valiant efforts this summer were greatly boosted by a group of 30 students from the Yale President’s Public Service Fellowship program who volunteered one afternoon and planted 4 hophornbeams near the northern entrance of the park. After that, the group kept meeting every Thursday evening, weeding, pruning and mulching the trees. During the mid-summer drought, the group focused on watering the trees and perennials and was able to revitalize many of them that were showing signs of severe drought stress, despite water being turned off on the site at that time. Later in the season, the group planted a cherry kwanzan tree near the northern entrance in honor of Mr. Noy Lim, who has been a dedicated volunteer for many years, and an American sentry linden near the park’s southern entrance.
