Summary
After several years as an Emeritus group, Shepard Street continues to provide a fine example of successful greenspace leadership and stewardship. Group leader Jody Kelly demonstrates an inspiring level of commitment to the greenspace, which has translated into another great year for Shepard Street. The group primarily focused on maintenance in the vacant lot, but still managed to supplement their clean-up efforts with some new plantings. The group started the summer with extensive raking and weeding, removing over ten bags of leaves from the greenspace. Then, the group moved onto planting, adding two shrubs and five perennials to the beds. Jody also started a new children’s program in the greenspace this summer; every Tuesday afternoon, children from the nearby daycare come to the vacant lot to hear Jody read a story. This program has introduced local children to the greenspace and greatly motivated the group to increase its clean-up efforts.
