Summary

This group--led by Jody Kelly--can be characterized by their dedication and stellar stewardship for over a decade. Throughout this summer they encountered sweltering heat on several occasions, but they persevered which allowed them to accomplish their goals and leave a great summer in the books. Maintenance and several beautification efforts were the focus of this year’s agenda. After extensive weeding early in the summer, plenty of mulch was spread throughout the space to help revive the aesthetics of the beds. Some work was done to prune the dogwood and other trees in order to clear the walkways of low-hanging branches in this shady refuge. The group also mowed and weeded the grassy area in the back of the space where Jody reads to children from a nearby daycare on Tuesdays. To fill in several open spots in the greenspace there were five perennials planted-- two coral bells and three liriope--which added unique foliage and new colors. The summer ended with a beautiful dedication and installation of a new arched sign at the entrance to the greenspace that reads “Shepard St Spruel Space,” a renaming that honors the group leader Charlene Spruel who started this greenspace group.
