Schuyler studied biology and music at Skidmore College. Schuyler loves the outdoors and loves learning about plants, foraging, and gardening and believes engagement with nature can lead to better well-being, greater self-reliance and can have a big impact on solving larger environmental problems. Schuyler became interested in community forestry while working at the New York Botanical Garden. Through URI, he hopes to facilitate community engagement with the environment and to learn how communities can overcome historic and institutional barriers to accessing the environment. His favorite tree is black walnut.

Newhall and Division had another great work day to end the year. We planted three andromeda shrubs and two heucheras in the front yards on the bottom of Newhall Street and weeded and mulched. |

We worked hard to finish up what we could at Oakley and Main, cutting the mulberry back from the sign and the crossing signal, pruning up the cornelian cherries, cutting down tree of heaven and Norway maple, pulling vines we could reach off of the evergreens and removing trash and brush from the ground. |

Today was a big party to celebrate the end of a great season. We ate and played games and threw water balloons. |

On the last day of greenspace, the group celebrated with food and reflected on the successes of the season. We also planted perennial flowers under the memorial tree planted earlier this Summer. |

We made a big difference at Oakley and Main today. We cut down vines off the mulberry and spruces, pruned up the cornelian cherries, and pruned back the mulberry to make the crosswalk signal more visible. |

The kids enjoyed planting two shrubs and spreading mulch and then played baseball. A volunteer brought her pet bearded dragon, Phoebe, who loved walking around in the raised beds and educating children. |

The neighborhood showed up to clean group leader, Dan's, yard. We weeded and mulched and then looked around at other yards to see what work could be done to wrap up the season. |

The Friends of East Rock Park worked alongside the Youth at Work high schoolers lead by Kenyanna Martin. We worked on restoring Betty's way by removing invasives from the trail and liberated young trees. We also started some plantings by the benches. |

Another work day. Kids and adults from the neighborhood weeded all over the garden including cutting back some invasive trees growing in the hedge, filling many weed bags. They helped unload mulch, then enjoyed some play time. |

Another great day. The high school team got a chance to tour through the oasis and congratulate themselves for all the hard work they put in. We finished up a lot of invasive removal and spread mulch around the entrance to the oasis and the peabody sign. We got a new bench delivered and the kids figured out how to get it to the desired location on their own. |

The volunteers and high school workers worked together to continue to remove invasives and clipped the willow stems blocking the view of the oasis. We focused on liberating many of the trees that were planted by the group in the past. |

A large group showed up for the work day. First we stewarded a memorial tree and then pruned a lot of other trees in the park as well as removed invasives, generating a huge pile of biomass. |

All the neighborhood kids came out to the garden and after weeding a bed, we replanted a bunch of perennials which died from the previous year. |

We pruned about 10 trees in streets and yards on Division street and checked in with some neighbors who have had yard work in the past. We encountered a flowering cherry that has reverted into a feral form, it is very large and covered in fruit. We also found a plane tree that was inexplicably dead when the surrounding trees were healthy. We suspect staples from traffic notices were the culprit. |

The group stewarded trees at the Farmington Canal between Thomson and Division. We pruned for healthy structures and mulched to keep grass competition down and to keep mowers away from the trunks. |
