Jeremy is a current student at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (FES), focusing on environmental policy analysis and climate adaptation at the local and regional level. Before attending Yale FES, he worked in the U.S. Senate and at Bloomberg BNA, researching and analyzing environmental health and safety regulations at the state and federal level. Jeremy is excited to work within the Greater New Haven Community to transform and beautify community greenspaces this summer.

On the last planting day of the season the group put in a red maple! We had great turnout and watered the entire season's plantings as well.

Mill River Trail

On the final planting day of the season, the group planted two trees in the Urban Oasis area, a Black Gum and an Eastern Red Cedar! The group also planted 4 Bayberry and 1 Myrica Gale shrubs and spread 2 cubic yards of wood chips over the planting beds. In addition, the group watered all of the season's plantings totaling 9 trees and 27 shrubs.

Troup Group

On the final work day of the season the group planted 14 total perennials, including 2 dwarf bee balm, 4 echinacea, 2 hostas, 2 strawberry yarrow, 2 saucy seduction yarrow, and 2 lady's mantle. The group also mulched these plantings and watered all of this season's plantings.

Oyster Point

Today was the Oyster Point greenspace group's last planting day of the season. The group planted an Eastern Red Cedar and a large Morton Elm, both in Bayview Park. In addition, the group mulched the trees and watered the rest of the plantings from this season.

Westville Community Nursery School

The group planted two more trees today, a Burgundy Cherry and a Kwanzan Cherry across from 15 Tour Ave. The group made large doughnuts and planted six perennials, including a strawberry yarrow, a saucy seduction yarrow, a catmint, a coreopsis, and two cheyenne echinacea. In addition, the group watered all of the plantings from this season.

Today the group dug through some compacted clay soil and gravel fill as they planted a beautiful horse chestnut tree behind the front baseball field in Bayview Park. The group also watered the trees in Bayview Park.

Ivy Narrow (Emeritus)

Today, 10 high school volunteers from the Newhallville neighborhood helped perform maintenance at the Ivy Narrow Site. The activities consisted of pruning holly shrubs, weeding the pathways and flower beds, collecting debris, and spreading two cubic yards of pine mulch.

Westville Community Nursery School

Today the group planted two more trees, a Japanese tree lilac and a purple prince crab apple along the curb strip! The parents and children also planted eight perennials consisting of two echinacea, two shasta daisies, two lady's mantle, and two spirea. The group also mulched the trees and watered all of the previous plantings.

Today the group had its first planting day of the season! We faced some heavy rains but the group and Common Ground high school students planted two large Eastern Red Cedars in the Urban Oasis area of the trail. We hope to continue with the momentum and plant more shrubs and trees next Wednesday!

Today the group planted two butterfly bushes in Triangle Park in addition to its first tree of the season in Bayview Park. The tree species planted was a Leyland Cypress in front of the sewage plant.

Today the group had its best turnout of the season as we planted 17 perennials and weeded the corner area near the river walk trail. The perennials we planted consisted of coreopsis, hostas, shasta daisies, day lilies, and lamb's ears.

Today, JR and I continued clearing the urban oasis area of Japanese knotweed and other invasive plants. All knotweed in the area besides the area closest to the river bank has been weeded or cut back to make way for future plantings this season!

Today, Bill and Dwight weeded the gardens around the memorial and tree stump and spread compost to make way for new plantings. We also restaked a couple of young trees in the park.

Today, Charlie and the kids planted 9 total perennials (4 hostas, 3 lady's mantle, 1 liriape, and 1 coral bell) and completed the mulching and watering. After planting finished up Dante and Dezzi made some mud pies and had some fun splashing each other with water.

Today, the group finished weeding and mulching the garden beds at Triangle Park. We also walked through Bayview Park to examine last year's tree plantings and to plan new tree plantings for this summer. Nextr week we hope to plant two butterfly bushes in Triangle Park to block the view of a nearby fence and an evergreen tree in Bayview Park.

Today, the Westville Community Nursery School greenspace group planted their third tree of the season, a beautiful Katsura tree! We had lots of younger community foresters digging the pit, planting the perennials, and mulching our doughnut. In addition to the tree, we planted two day lilies and two coreopsis plants.

Ivy Narrow (Emeritus)

Today I met with Ivy Narrow Bird Sanctuary community greenspace leader, Jeanette Thomas, to discuss upcoming work plans for the site. During the week of July 10th, a group of volunteers will attend a workday at the site to prune mountain laurel and holly shrubs; to cut down a stump on a downed tree; and to continue weeding the garden of poison ivy, Norway maple saplings, and other invasive species.

Troup Group

Today, Charlie and the kids dug out holes on the curb strip and planted 13 perennials! The plantings consisted of 4 day lilies, 4 Russian sage, 3 yuccas, and 2 ice plants. After they finished planting, the kids mulched and watered all of the plantings from this current season. Next week we'll continue planting towards the Beers St/Edgewood Ave intersection.

This week the group continued with maintenance and pruning in Triangle Park. We removed seven lawn bags worth of invasive weeds and cut back rosa rugosa shrubs along the far end of the triangle. Next week we plan on wrapping up maintenance of Triangle Park and mulching the flowerbeds and plantings from last season.

Westville Community Nursery School

Once again, we had great turnout for the Westville Community Nursery School greenspace group. This week the group planted its second tree, a goldenrain tree. The kids helped make the tree doughnut, plant six perennials, and mulch the whole doughnut! The perennials consisted 2 coreopsis, 2 catmints, and 2 day lilies. Next week, the group will continue to planting more trees and perennials!

This week, the group began removing Japanese knotweed, mugwort, and other invasives plants from the trail nearby Grand Paint. The group pulled enough weeds to fill up two truckloads.

This week, I worked with Dwight and Bill to reshape and clean up Griswold Park's walkways. We spread 2 cubic yards of stone dust at the site to make the walkways wider and more uniform.

Westville Community Nursery School

Today, we planted our first tree, a beautiful tulip tree with two catmint (purple) and two coreopsis (yellow) perennials! The group dug a big hole and even had to break up some asphalt remaining from a prior curb strip before dropping the tree in place and filling the hole with soil and compost. The children playing on the playground helped us construct the tree doughnut, plant the perennials, and mulch the area.

Griswold Park

Today Marge, Bill, and Dwight worked to weed invasives from the Griswold Park Triangle and prepare the park for the summer season. Overall, we hauled away nearly two truck loads of weeds and debris from the site. We also discussed plans to add stone dust next week to better define the park's pathways.

Westville Community Nursery School

Today, I met with the Westville Community Nursery School Board to discuss plans for beautifying the Tour Ave streetscape surrounding the Westville Community Nursery School campus and playground. The group identified beautification of the curb strip, providing shade for children using the playground, and easing maintenance efforts as main goals for the summer. The group is also interested in working within the community to better connect with neighbors in close proximity to campus. Regular workdays for this group will be Saturdays from 9am-11am.

Ivy Narrow (Emeritus)

Today 10 volunteers, including eight students and one chaperone from the Hopkins School performed maintenance at the Ivy Narrow Bird Sanctuary. Volunteers removed multiple invasive species, including poison ivy and mugwort, pruned evergreen trees, and cleared debris from the site. Volunteers also spread 3 cubic yards of pine mulch surrounding plants, shrubs, and trees at the site.

Today, Oyster Point Greenspace leader, Steve Wilcox, and I met to discuss plans for Bayview Park and Triangle Park this summer. We walked through the two parks and evaluated the health of recent years tree plantings in addition to identifying opportunities for new tree plantings. Our initial plan involves weeding and mulching around the shrubs and perennials in Triangle Park to prepare the space for July 4th festivities before moving to maintenance and plantings in Bayview Park. Regular workdays for the Oyster Point group are scheduled for Saturdays from 12:00pm-2:00pm.

Mill River Trail

The Mill River group met on Thursday, June 1st with URI Director, Chris Ozyck, and representatives from the New Haven City Plan Department to discuss plans for the Mill River Trail and accompanying urban oasis space during the 2017 summer. In addition to invasive removal and wildflower and shrub plantings, the group would like to repair benches to help make the Mill River Trail a destination that connects residents from both East Rock and Fair Haven to the river.

Troup Group

During the initial 2017 summer planning meeting for the Beers St./Troup Group Greenspace group, streetscape maintenance, including pruning and mulching were discussed. Almost all of the trees planted in recent years are in very good health, but pruning will be required to help them survive and thrive. Group leader, Charlie Nixon, expressed a desire to plant additional trees where possible and spruce up the streetscape with perennials of various colors to liven the neighborhood.
