Lauren is a joint degree student at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and Yale Divinity School. Before coming to Yale she worked with a non-profit organization, Capital Roots, that worked to increase access to fresh, affordable, and nutritious food in the New York capital region. After working with urban agriculture and food access, Lauren is enjoying working on cities' approaches to greenspace and forestry projects this summer with URI.
This was our final week, and we made one last push to clear as many weeds and invasives as we could from the tree line. We also watered the three trees planted this season.
This was the group's final week, so to close out the season they had a big end of the summer celebration and barbeque. There was hotdogs and watermelon, a water balloon toss, wiffle ball, and plenty of bubbles.
This week we put in two new perennials in the bed surrounding one of the trees, five perennials in the curb strip around a tree, and grass seed along the rest of the curb strip.
This week we finished planting at Sandra's house, adding two ninebark and three hostas with the already existing azaleas to the newly created bed. We also laid down compost and grass seed on the outside of the bed to create a more tidy look.
This week we planted three liriope to fill in spaces along the one of the beds, completed our brick border of the mulched beds, and continued to mulch the areas surrounding the three trees.
This was the first week working with Common Ground students. We worked on removing weeds and invasives between the two trail entrances. We also watered the three trees planted this season on site.
This week we planted 6 new perennials and extended the flower bed we created this summer with more mulch and a brick border. We had 15 children come out and work with us to get everything done.
This week we worked on Sandra's yard, whose yard was lead tested and required some remediation. Carol was able to plant two plants in the curb strip as well.
This past week we planted 4 perennials, several annuals that the group had and wanted to include, and created a new bed in the back corner of the lot. We had 11 volunteers to do the work and were able to finish it all.

This was the first of two volunteer days that Neighborhood Housing Services was hosting independently at Sherman Parkway. They had about 30 high school volunteers come out to work on weeding and mulching around the trees. I came to deliver tools for them and help get them started.
I met with the core group of stakeholders on Truman St. We worked on planning what they wanted to accomplish throughout the summer, which included stewardship and adding more perennials and shrubs.
