We replaced all of the dead plants in the Howard Avenue planter during our workday. With proper care, we are hopeful that these will prove more hardy than the previous plants in the area.
We continued clearing out English ivy and other invasives from the small triangle in the corner of the park where we'd like to place a garden. It was hard work, but we made good progress!
Woodchucks dug up most of the coneflowers we planted in the oasis last week, so we replanted them this week, trying to camouflage them with branches. We also found a painted turtle laying eggs in the path in the oasis, and tried to fence off the area where it was.

We planted 15 liriope and 5 hostas during our workday today, completing around a third of the border in front of the park. Even though there's still a lot of work to be done, it already looks great as it is. We were lucky to miss the heat wave, and hopefully we'll continue to have similar luck with the weather after the break.
We worked on the hillside above the baseball fields with some amazing volunteers from Medtronic. Despite the heat, we managed to cut out a ton of burning bush and had a great time while doing so!
Sam and I cut away a bunch of weeds on the south corner of the park by Townsend Ave today. We are eventually hoping to reclaim the area and turn it into a small garden with the help of our master gardener, Liz.
I planted two Coneflowers and two northern blue flags in the Urban Oasis today! It was a hot and humid morning, but we managed to push through and have a very productive workday!
We prepped the ground at the front of the park for our planting next week today. It was inundated with roots and dirt, so we loosened it as much as we could with pickaxes. We are hoping to plant ~20 liriope and hostas next week.
We did a lot of work around the park today, adding new signage and wooden barriers to hopefully protect native plants inside planters from being cut and mowed. We also cleared out more burning bush in the alcove we were working in last week.
Sam and I walked along Townsend avenue today, trying to advertise our weekly meetings to the community. Hopefully we'll see some new faces in the coming weeks!
We planted a new Tickseed in the center of the Urban Oasis today, and prepared a hole where a new male American holly is going to be planted. There was still plenty of work to be done weeding out invasives, but it was great to finally begin planting!
We pulled out tons of burning bush from a little rocky alcove in the center of the park! The area was also covered in poison ivy, but we managed to push through successfully!
We had a great workday today, clearing out all of the dead evergreens in the Howard Ave planter. Hopefully we'll start planting next week. Very exciting times ahead!
We had a very productive day, using the first 30 minutes or so to make plans for the next three weeks, and then spending the rest of the workday weeding out the grove of trees at the front of the park. There were tons of Norway maple saplings, but we made great progress!
The Friends of Lenzi Park did some weeding near the south end of the park today, and managed to clear out two planters almost entirely! We are hoping to put down some mulch next week if there is rain.
We did some great work in the Beaver Ponds Urban Oasis today, weeding out mugwort and multiflora rose. We also fixed up a fence and are hoping to begin planting some shrubs next week!
The Friends of Fairmont Park had a very productive day! Izzy and Jean spent the majority of the workday pulling out mugwort, while Marty cut down some tree of heaven and other invasive shrubs. Sylvia and I walked through the park and looked at the areas where work can be done this summer.
Nan, Grace, and I walked through the Beaver Ponds Urban Oasis, looking at the various plants growing in the areas. We also did some off-trail adventuring and went to some overgrown places by the water where there used to be well-maintained paths.
Steve, Misha, and I walked around Bayview Park and City Point to the various green areas that the group maintains. We looked at how well work from the previous year has held up and made some plans for the summer.
Jenny, Mary, and I met in Lenzi Park to do some weeding and talk about our goals for the summer ahead. We managed to remove most of the weeds in three large flower beds beside the road during the meeting! Lenzi Park is in great shape, and will look even better once we do some more weeding.
The Friends of Beaver Ponds Park hosted a Pizza Party on Wednesday, 5/29, to kick off the summer. At the event, the group gave introductions and went over their plans for the greenspace and urban oasis.
