Jenn's last day consisted of three vital projects: stonedusting, weeding, and watering! |
08/03/2022 |
Today, Jenn's last day, the team decided to plant a tree! A Black Tupelo, specifically. The team learned how to find a root flare, how to put the tree in the hole, and much more! Join J.R. next week as they get more work done around the trail! |
08/02/2022 |
For the last workday of Fort Wooster for Summer 2022, the ground planted two Blue Spruce trees! Hurrah! |
07/30/2022 |
Stonedust, stonedust, and more stonedust! Today was a maintenance day, just improving the already beautiful lot. |
07/30/2022 |
Today, the group forged through some poison ivy to get to the holy grail: trash! Intermixed with the trash was some dead weeds that was cut down, which they also picked up. Reach out to QHAT's email (qhat.nhv@gmail.com) for more information on upcoming workdays! |

Mill River’s second day planting went well. Three Northern Bayberry shrubs were put in the ground, and they were watered excessively! Next week, we hope to plant a tree in the ground! Join us for the upcoming workday on Wednesday at 5:00pm! |
07/26/2022 |
No one on the team thought they were gonna make it past the workday. The rocky soil made the workday equally as rocky, and no one knew what to do other than keep trying. So that’s what they did. They kept trying and kept trying until a hole was dug. And once the holes were dug, six hollies were placed into the ground. |
07/23/2022 |
Today the thirsty plants of the Blake Street pocket park got a huge drink of water! Stone dust was also put down, making the park really come together. Come join us every Saturday at 3:00pm to help! |
07/23/2022 |
Today, the team of Shepard and Huntington watered and mulched. The hot sun had not yet come out, but the team downed bottles of water nonetheless. It was a safe, successful workday. Come join us every Saturday at 8am! |
07/23/2022 |
Today, the QHAT team cleaned up the rest of Quinnipiac Ave. The hot day didn’t get the team down, as they plowed through the sidewalk, picking up trash along the way. |

A lot happened today. We planted, weeded, and watered! The irrigation systems work perfectly, and the variegated liriopes that were planted look beautiful. The whole Garden is truly coming together to be something the moms can be proud of. |

Today was an adventure in what felt like the jungle. The Mill River in East Rock is an adventure within itself, with poison ivy and bugs and a grown over path and a new, currently building path to the river. Join us next week for PLANTING by Grand Paint on Wednesday! |
07/12/2022 |
Today was a preparation day, in preparation for the plantings that the Friends of Fort Wooster Park intend to do. To prepare, the group discussed while pulling weeds. They discussed what to plant, where to plant it, how many to plant, and plans like that. All of this was discussed while the group pulled some Mugwort and other nice smelling invasives. Come join us next Tuesday as we plant some Boxwoods! |
07/02/2022 |
Today, another site joined forces with us! We had conversations, interacted with the neighborhood, and mulched even more! There is also a cool new banner that was hung up on the fence to invite all of Newhallville to the site. Come on by on the 16th at 8am to help us beautify the lot! |
07/02/2022 |
Today the QHAT team collected a large amount of trash (3 bags!) down Quinnipiac Avenue. As one of the volunteers said, this work most likely makes a simple drive to work much better, as one now gets to drive down a clean road rather than a dirty one. Come join us on the 16th to continue to clean Fair Haven Heights! |

Big plans are in store for Fort Wooster Park! Think plantings, weeding, and a sign! The group walked around the park, spray paintings areas where the plants would go, and dreaming about the potential of the park. Come join us every Tuesday at 3:00 (except the 5th of July!) to beautify this park with us! |
06/29/2022 |
Today, the team found a new weed! The Grapevine, a nasty little weed, was strangling the trees all along the Mill River Trail. No need to fret, though, because the Mill River team immediately began attacking it. They got a lot of it, but they need your help to get more! Come join them every Wednesday at 5:00pm starting on 7/13 to attack the Grapevine and win the botanical war! |
06/25/2022 |
Today was the mulching day. An alternative to the planting and weeding that the site has been doing for the past few weeks! Jenn brought a truckload of mulch that was spread around by Sam and Kyle and Carlata, and the team worked hard to make the lot look even more beautiful. Join us on Saturdays at 8:00 to help beautify the lot! |
06/25/2022 |
Very small, yet productive workday today! The team walked down a small street behind East Grand Avenue and picked up a total of FOUR trash bags! So much trash! The good news, though, is that the trash is all gone. And if the trash returns, you can bet we will too. |

New Haven Botanical Garden of Healing Dedicated to Victims of Gun Violence |
A very successful workday today! The moms were all able to make it, as well as a large number of guests! The volunteers weeded multiple areas of the garden, from the Tree of Life to the butterfly garden to the swales. This was in addition to the pruning the moms did, pruning various trees around the garden to make it safer for cars and pedestrians. Finally, the moms were also able to plant various roses in the center garden! A successful, productive, and fun workday today. Join us next time on Saturday at 9:00! |
06/25/2022 |
Today was a small workday. The team was small, but mighty! They weeded along the stone dust path, and up in the circle garden. There was a lot of bonding occurring alongside the weeding, bonding over music, weekend plans, and escape rooms! This workday was a combination of social and maintenance, as the team grew closer as the site got cleaned up. |

Today, a new development occurred at the Botanical Garden of Healing. A new sign was put in! Jenn, Celeste, Pam and Marlene all joined together at 8:30 with two men from the sign company and worked to make this spectacular event happen! The sign stands proud at the end of the park now, teaching the community about the site. Come join us every Saturday at 9:00 to take a look at it! |
06/22/2022 |
The small but mighty group that worked today at Mill River successfully removed Japanese Knotweed, Tree of Heaven, and trash from the trail. After weed wacking along the river (literally, weed WACKING, with a new tool that Chris showed the group!), the group pushed forward to the Humphrey underpass and found “treasures” among the trash, including pacifiers, McDonald’s bags, and even a bumper off of a car! Come join us at Grand Paint next Wednesday at 5:00 to do more cleaning, and, soon, some planting! |
06/18/2022 |
Some beautiful perennials were planted at Blake Street today! They’re called Speedwells – or, if you prefer, Veronica Spicata. Come see them next Saturday at 3:00pm as we all work together to make the pocket park even more vibrant! |
06/18/2022 |
Jenn is so used to attacking Mugwort and Japanese Knotweed that today, when she faced a new enemy – garbage – she felt out of place! She tried her best, though, and thanks to the QHAT leaders and the New Haven Fire Department, E Grand Avenue looks beautiful! Join us next Saturday at 12:30pm as we start by the fire station again and work our way down! |

Big plans in store for the Botanical Garden of Healing. Perennials, pruning, mulching… they can’t wait to implement them all! Come join us next Saturday at 12:30 to plant some beautiful yellow, purple, and white flowers! Or, alternatively, you can help prune the stunning tree that covers the end of the site! You’ll always have something to look forward to at the Botanical Garden of Healing. |

06/18/2022 |
Today, those aforementioned brilliant plans were put into action! Perennials were planted, mulch was put down, shrubs were trimmed, work was done all around! It was a great day for Shepard and Huntington. Stay tuned for more amazing plans in store for the site! Come volunteer every Saturday at 8:00am on the corner of Shepard and Huntington! |
06/15/2022 |
Today the Mill River team pulled and clipped invasives from the beginning of the Mill River Trail. They found beautiful invasives, twining ones, and even more beautiful ones (see picture attached!) Come join us next Wednesday as we conduct more maintenance, picking up trash and more weeding! |
06/11/2022 |
Today, the Blake Street team worked and talked. They talked about possible plant additions while also doing plant removals. Clover dominated the entire pocket park! They also talked about other various things – their families, chairs, and more! Jenn has an entire list of things to work on for the next week, and so does Patrice. Come join them next Saturday at 3:00 as they put these plans into action! |

All the mothers were able to make it to this workday for the Botanical Garden of Healing, which was great! Together, they made decisions for the entire park, like where the new sign should go and which logos they should use. Come join us next Saturday at 9:00 to see what decisions were made, and help us attack weeds! |
06/11/2022 |
Big plans for the Shepard and Huntington lot. They’re thinking more plants, more weeding, and more outreach! Today was both a planning and maintenance meeting. Come join us next Saturday to help us plant beautiful perennials and do more maintenance duties! |
06/09/2022 |
Is it possible to give a tour of a park all on a phone call? Well, that’s exactly what Sam and Sue did! Jenn missed the meeting between the Friends of Fort Wooster Park, so phone call tour it is! The group went over the watering problem (almost solved! Just a few more things need to fall into place), planned the next workday (feel free to volunteer!), and planned trail maintenance (stay tuned for the surprise developments!). Many things are in the works for Fort Wooster park, and you can be a part of it all! Our next workday is June 14th, 2022, at Fort Wooster park, on Clarendon Street. See you there! |
06/08/2022 |
There were two primary invasives attacking the section of the Mill River that J.R. and his team worked on today: Japanese Knotweed and Tree of Heaven. The primary weed that was removed today was Japanese Knotweed - and a lot of it! The amount of biomass that accumulated completely weighed down the Mugwort that it was dumped on top of! Come join us in attacking the invasives of the Mill River Trail! Every Wednesday at 5:00pm, we go out and conduct trail maintenance, to make the beautiful Urban Oasis even better! |
06/04/2022 |
Today, Patrice and Jenn multitasked. Picking up trash while talking about the beautiful park that surrounded them. “Lots of weeding to do.” “More perennials?” “And a vegetable garden!” Excitement filled the air as the duo talked and worked. The meeting was only about 30 minutes long, but many ideas were exchanged and many bags of chips were picked up. Come join us to make these ideas come to fruition next Saturday at 3:00 at 187 Blake Street! |
06/04/2022 |
Today, J.R. Logan showed Jenn Richburg the entire loop that is the Mill River Trail. From the rocky trail itself to the numerous trees planted by both the Mill River team and URI, the trail is coming together to become the stunning Urban Oasis it is meant to be. But the Mill River Trail needs your help! Japanese Knotweed and Tree of Heaven have taken over, and it’s up to us to attack back. Come join us next Wednesday, June 8th at 4:30pm for Mill River’s very first workday! |

Say “hurrah!” with us as we kick off the first day of workdays for the Botanical Garden of Healing! Today, we waged war: the War on Weeds! Knotweed, Garlic Mustard, and Mugwort were the enemies, but the moms declared a semi-victory today against them. I say “semi” victory because more help is needed! Come out and wage war with us on those pesky weeds every Saturday at 9am on 105 Valley Street! |
06/04/2022 |
Today was the first workday of Shepard and Huntington! Hoorah! The short, yet productive, workday consisted of mowing the overgrown grass (take a glance at the attached picture – so stunning!), picking up organic litter in the lot (including a GIANT branch!), and cleaning up street trash. The members of the Shepard and Huntington Lot care a tremendous amount about their community, and if you do too, you should join them! Come on out every Saturday at 8:00am! You’ll find us on the corner of Shepard and Huntington! See you there! |
06/03/2022 |
To claim that today was “only” a planning meeting is an understatement. Sam Faucett showed Jenn Richburg the entire neighbourhood from the seat in the center of the Shepard and Huntington lot, from the issues of the community to the creative solutions. Alongside the thriving Redwood came conversations about goals for the upcoming season, complaints about last season, and hope for the future. Come join us on Saturday, June 4th, 2022 at 8:30am on the corner of Shepard Street and Huntington Street to make the beautiful neighbourhood even more colorful and vibrant! |
06/02/2022 |
On June 2nd, 2022, Sam Sigg, Sue Marchese, Dave Marchese and Jenn Richburg sat on the old bench in front of the playground up on the site, discussing trees, birds, and, most importantly, Fort Wooster Park. They discussed the issues the Friends of Fort Wooster Park are experiencing, including access to water and weed control, and afterwards, they took a nice, calm (and wet!) walk around the Park, identifying the weeds, where the Friends would like trees and evergreens to go, and pointing out the previously planted perennials, like Russian Sage. The meeting went successfully, and the group was able to consolidate the issues that need to be addressed and come up with plans for how to address them. Next planning meeting will be Thursday, June 9th at Fort Wooster Park. |
