Hey y’all! I’m Avery; lover of gardening, guitar, drag, and all things mycilial. I am from West Virginia originally and received my bachelor’s at WVU, spent a year teaching and organizing in Thailand, graduated from YDS with a master’s in religion and ecology, and i’m a former coordinator of the YDS DivFarm. I am grateful to be apart of URI’s invaluable work in New Haven, creating more accessible urban green spaces and helping others build a connection with the land.

As a long-standing symbol of peace, endorsed by the United Nations, the West River Peace Garden serves as a bridge that connects peace efforts abroad to combating violence within New Haven. Aaron, Frank, and I had our first meeting of the summer to discuss their goals for beautifying the Peace Garden. They would like to revitalize the planters, remove poison ivy, add new flowers around the sign, and plant a magnolia tree. With an affinity for butterflies, Aaron and Frank would love to plant a variety of native flowers and create a safe haven for pollinators. The group will be meeting every Friday from 9:00-11:00am. Volunteers are welcome, come out and help us honor this special greenspace!
