2026 Greenspace Report

The Farmington Canal Learning Corridor has transformed the local landscape of Newhallville. Once an open-air drug trafficking space, the site now teems with life, as flowers bloom, butterflies flutter, and trees grow. Now stewarded by Doreen Abubakar and the Community Placemaking and Engagement Network, the Learning Corridor serves as a place for community building and environmental education. This summer, the Friends of the Learning Corridor focused on stewarding the urban oasis and flower beds, removing invasive species and planting non-invasive perennials. This season’s work brought a new life to the space, enabling the Learning Corridor to continue thriving.

• 18 perennials planted (3 Heuchera americana, 3 Heuchera ‘Plum Pudding, 3 Heuchera x ‘Caramel’, 3 Liriope muscari ‘Variegata’, 3 Hemerocallis ‘Stella d’Oro’, 3 Coreopsis ‘Daybreak’)
• 0.5 yards compost spread
• 2.5 yards mulch spread
• 6 events
• 7 volunteers
• 44 volunteer hours
