For the last workday of the season, the Washington Ave volunteers decided to move the greenspace sign in the garden, since the view of it from the street had been blocked by the rosebushes. After working together to dig out the sign, the volunteers moved it to the middle garden, to make it more visible and welcoming for community members.

Today was a special day for Washington Ave, as a beautiful Kwanzan Cherry tree was planted in memorial. The morning started off on a difficult note, with a huge rock impeding the digging of the hole, but with perseverance and teamwork, the group was able to get the rock out! Once the hole was completed, the whole group helped with different parts of planting the tree, including removing the wire basket, mixing the compost and soil, and filling in the hole. Once the tree was planted, 4 violets were also added in, and then a layer of fresh woodchips was spread around the tree. Finally, the kids got to work watering the tree and all the other plants in the garden. It was a beautiful morning and a great way to end the planting season!

Today was a special day for the Washington Ave greenspace! A group of students from LEAP, an academic and social enrichment program, came to work in the garden. The girls participated in digging holes and planting 8 perennials (5 sedum and 3 liriope) with group leader Nikki, as well as watering the whole garden. Then, they did an arts and crafts project--customizing their own laminated butterfly signs to be hung up around the garden! It was a very productive day, and the team looks forward to coming back in the future!
