2024 Greenspace Report

Mrs. Betty Thompson has long been a force in New Haven, facilitating the very start of the Greenspace program. Her daughter Kenya has proven the same, inspiring the Cedar Hill and greater New Haven community through her work with the Parks department and her daily interactions with her neighbors. Ms. Betty Thompson and Kenya’s family are key constituents of the Cedar Hill emeritus group, still actively stewarding three sites in the neighborhood: the East Rock median; Betty’s tree; and the 219 sign. This season, we worked to clean up the View Street playground before moving onto the median, where we weeded, added new plants and flowers, and mulched to revitalize the space. We continued this work at Betty’s tree and the 219 sign, adding a few new plants to each site to create a sense of newness and draw people’s attention to the stewardship of these spaces. We worked steadily and throughout the summer, ensuring we could dedicate time and care to each of these spaces, and always making time to share stories and laugh together. This family’s fierce and warm spirit has given so much to the Cedar Hill neighborhood!
