URI Recieves $626K Subaward from EPA Grant

The City of New Haven has been awarded $20 million as a recipient of the US EPA 2024 Community Change Grant. URI will be recieving a $626,770 subaward from the grant to fund 400 tree plantings in priority street corridors, staff and adult apprentice funding, and tools and materials for community greenspace and tree planting crews for 2025-2027!

East Rock Community Magnet School honored one of their former beloved teachers, Mrs. Norine Polio, by unveiling new trees planted on their school grounds in memorial of her. Urban Resources Initiative planted this cluster of trees, called “Polio’s Place.”

A Shoreline Walk Thru The ​“Real” & ​“Ideal”

30 people took a walk through Morris Cove, from Lighthouse Point Park to East Shore Park and back again, to see for themselves the route the city has proposed for the Shoreline Greenway Trail. Organized by the New Haven Bioregional Group, one of the walk’s leaders was Chris Ozyck of Urban Resources Initiative.

The Urban Resources Initiative planted 5 young Yoshinos in Wooster Square Park, joining an array of cherry blossom trees which reached peaked bloom just in time for the 51st annual Wooster Square Cherry Blossom Festival.

Want a tree? Urban Resources Initiative to plant 1K trees in New Haven this year

URI is going from planting 500 trees a year to 1,000 trees a year for the next five years due to a $2.6 million award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. URI will plant these additional 500 trees in neighborhoods where there are few trees and hotter temperatures.
